Hairspray is the story of a positive youngster named Tracy Turnblad, a would-be performer who wants to gain a position on a neighbouring telly series referred to as the Corny Collins Show. The programme is in fact based on a Baltimore-based TV programme named the Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, Maryland.
Tracy is an unknown in the performing world when she auditions, yet she is chosen for one of the performing roles and against considerably long odds becomes a dancing star practically overnight. Tracy is thrilled with this newfound status, & she comes to a decision to utilise her reputation to bring about positive improvements to the television show. The major grounds for these positive changes is related to race. Tracy wishes to racially join the program, & as one might guess, Tracy is confronted with a substantial amount of disagreement.
Hairspray moved to the West End in two-thousand and seven, opening for first previews at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October 11, before being revealed to the paying public at its official opening on October 30, two thousand and seven. The play has included some popular named actors — Michael Ball takes the part of Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s very own mother, delivering a wonderful interpretation in this demanding female character, whilst Mel Smith played joke shop proprietor Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy’s father. The original cast in the London West End also features newcomer to the theatre stage, Leanne Jones, in the leading character of Tracy.
Hairspray the theatre show has gained loads of upbeat reviews from newspapers & show enthusiasts alike. Jacqueline stated: “I have been to see the play 4 times so far & I am going back again at some point next week & a few more times after that. I love the theatre show & wish they could stay on much longer. Ben Ellis is fabulous as link and Leanne Jones as Tracey and Michael Ball, well they are all simply superb. The theatre play hairspray is with out doubt my favourite, simply because it is optimistic and if you’re feeling sad then it is guaranteed to make you feel a great deal happier. I give it a ten out of ten – I love it well done to everyone involved.
