The opportunities for surgical technologists are great. Each technican could find 5 jobs. The attention to detail that a surgical technican has means a lot to the life of the patient. Helping the surgeon in the operating room is one of the main tasks. A surgical technican needs to work quickly and efficiently, as well as carefully and diligently, and they must handle emergencies well on top of being strong enough to witness what they do. Preparing and sterilizing the operating room for surgery, transporting patients, passing instruments to the surgeon, retracting tissues and closing sutures are some of the technican’s duties. Not all surgeries are quick and easy so a technician must be able to stand for hours.

You will need to attend a course for 2 years at a recognized school to enter this field. Your surgical tech programs options are plenty, but if you don’t have surgical technologist certification, you will not have the same opportunities as people who do. You can learn theory and practical studies with certified programs. Anatomy, medical terminology and sterilization are standard courses. Many surgical technology training programs also offer internships and supervised clinical training. Once you graduate with a certificate, you can expect a higher salary. Specialization in pediatrics, cardiology or orthopedics is also possible, unless you want to simply work an average work week.
